My art was inspired by the early American folk art of “Scrimshaw”. The old sailors used sail needles to scribe whale’s teeth during those lonely times aboard their vessels. Once scribed, they emulsified coal dust and wiped into the incised lines.
I have applied by own technique to replicate this art by using drafting pencils instead of sail cloth needles. The lead drafting pencils are applied to the surface of the ivory to replicate the incised lines as applied by the sailors.
The resulting image, in my opinion matches if not exceeds the images rendered by these marine romantics of old.
